Graveside services will be at 10:00 AM Monday, October 1, 2012, at Memory Gardens Cemetery, with Chaplain Jim Yates of Interim Hospice, officiating. Military honors are courtesy of the U. S. Navy, and arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mr. Sargent was born October 2, 1928 in Burkburnett. He was a Golden Glove boxer during his youth. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, serving at the end of World War II in Shanghai, China. He married Pearl Tackett on March 27, 1948 in Pampa. She preceded him in death on July 9, 1999. He was a founding member of the Skellytown Optimist Club. Preston had been a resident of Pampa since 1972, moving from White Deer. He was a former police officer with the Amarillo Police Department. He was a deputy sheriff for Carson County and also served as White Deer City Marshall from 1966 until 1972. He was employed by Fish Construction in Borger, retiring in 1991 after 15 years of service. Preston loved to sing and play the guitar. He is survived by 3 sons: Ronnie Sargent and wife Emily of Borger, Terry Sargent and wife Kathy of White Deer, and Brian Sargent and wife Tiffany of Plano; 2 brothers: Leroy Sargent of Fritch and Dallas Sargent of Kingfisher, Oklahoma; a sister: Drucella Hamrick of Phoenix, Arizona; 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Preston was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 3 sisters.Memorials may be made to the White Deer Food Pantry, White Deer, Texas 79097, or Interim Hospice, 2217 Perryton Pkwy, Pampa, Texas 79065.
