SERVICES: Memorial services will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 14, 2012, at Polk Street United Methodist Church, with John Curry of Pampa, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Pampa.BIOGRAPHY: Johnna was born January 29, 1966, in Crosbyton, Texas. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Johnnie and Barbara Brown.Johnna graduated from Plains High School in 1984. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Tech University in 1987 and her Master's degree from Texas A&M in 2004 where she graduated with honors. Johnna loved the theater and was in numerous plays throughout her high school and college years. She was very creative and enjoyed refurbishing old things. Johnna was an avid reader and encouraged her children and students to embrace a love for reading. Johnna was a member of the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals. Johnna and her husband, Dean, moved with their three children to Amarillo in 2005 where Johnna worked as an educational consultant at Region 16, assistant principal for Randall High School and Greenways Intermediate School and, most recently, principal for River Road High School. Johnna touched the lives of many as her passion for education was evident to all who knew her. Johnna loved her family and is survived by her husband, Dean; her daughter, Lexi Summers, sons, Jake and Andy; her father-in-law, Wallace Birkes of Pampa, Texas, two sisters, Connie Fletcher and her husband, Bruce, of San Angelo, Texas, and Sue Baker and her husband, Tom, of College Station, Texas; half-sister, Judy Bryant of Dallas, Texas, sister-in-law, Cheryl Smith and her husband Mike, of New Braunfels, Texas ; nieces Kristy Dexter, D'Lee Fletcher and Stephanie Honsberger, nephews Luke Fletcher, Aaron Baker, Lane Baker, Landon Baker, Travis Smith, and Clay Smith, and many great nieces and nephews. The family suggests donations be made to the benefit account that has been set up in Johnna Birkes name at Amarillo National Bank. Checks can be mailed to Amarillo National Bank, P.O. Box 1, Amarillo, TX 79105, payable to: Benefit of Johnna Birkes. Donations can also be made to: Johnna Birkes Scholarship Fund, Attn: Lori Vickers, 9500 US Hwy. 287N, Amarillo, TX, 79108.
