The family moved to Pampa when he was a young child where he grew up and attended Pampa schools. He was a 1943 graduate of Pampa High School and then served in the Army Air Corps until 1945. After his discharge, he followed his high school sweetheart, Shirley Sone, to the University of Oklahoma where he received a degree in mechanical engineering. Gene and Shirley married in 1946 and had two daughters, Lynn and Lea. Gene worked as a housing inspector for FHA and as a project engineer for both Cabot and Celanese Corp. He was also a homebuilder in Pampa. After 40 years of marriage, Shirley died in 1987. He married for a second time in 1988 to Ruth Busse. After Ruth's death in 2008, Gene moved to Keller to live with his daughter Lea, where he graciously tolerated being pampered by his daughters, three granddaughters, his sister, and neighborhood friends for the last three years of his life, even though he still called Pampa his "home." SURVIVORS: two daughters: Lynn Wright and husband Gene of Austin, and Lea Hobbs and husband John of Keller; a sister: Joan Kuhne and husband Bob of Richardson; three granddaughters: Lauren Hobbs, Jennifer Hobbs and Christie Wright. MEMORIALS: Book of Remembrance, First Presbyterian Church, 525 N. Gray, Pampa, Texas 79065.
