SERVICES: Pending with Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.BIOGRAPHY: Mr. Gilstrap was born December 25, 1941 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the only child of Geneva Gullickson Gilstrap and long-time Amarillo journalist Harry B. Gilstrap, Jr. He was a 1958 graduate of Amarillo High School and attended West Texas State University, majoring in speech and journalism. Following his service in the U. S. Army Reserves, he attended radio school at Elkins Institute in Dallas. Harry worked at radio and television stations in the Texas Panhandle and in Oklahoma, as a radio engineer, newsman and broadcaster for 35 years, and also taught at Elkins Institute in Oklahoma City. A memorial service for Mr. Gilstrap will be held later in the summer, and his ashes will be taken to the mountains at Taos, New Mexico, where his son Neill's ashes were scattered following his death in 1996.Mr. Gilstrap is survived by Andrew King and wife Rachael of Canyon, his nephew by marriage, who took care of him for several years as his health declined; and friends Dustin Allen and wife Michelle of Stillwater, Oklahoma, who cared for Harry following his retirement. Other relatives include his former sisters-in-law: Linda King and Gwyn Kayler, both of Skellytown, Deborah Hendrick of Canyon Lake; his former wife: Kathleen Gould of Wilmington, North Carolina; and nephews: Kelly Hendrick of San Marcos and Gary King of Daphne, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his only child: Neill Frank Gilstrap.
