SERVICES: 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 18, 2005 in Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Dr. Charles Jones, pastor of Hollywood Road Community Church in Amarillo, officiating.BURIAL: Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.BIOGRAPHY: Mr. Maness was born on Dec. 27, 1906 in Memphis, Tennessee to Mitch and Minnie Maness. He came to the Texas Panhandle on Dec. 21, 1915 with his parents.The late Putt Powell, former sports editor at the Amarillo Globe News wrote several articles over his years at the newspaper mentioning Mr. Maness as having been an outstanding basketball player for the Pampa Harvesters, and in one article, stated "Troy Maness beat the Amarillo Sandies by himself." "The Harvester," Pampa High School's annual, stated he was also a "fast and powerful" football player. He left school in 1928, after 11 years, to help on the family farm. He later became known as "one of the best farmers in the White Deer community."Mr. Maness married Mattie Lou Ward in Corinth, Mississippi on October 18, 1947. They lived on a farm outside White Deer until retiring in 1980, and they moved to Pampa in 1981 where they were members of Calvary Baptist Church. Mr. Maness especially enjoyed the fellowship, cards, dominoes, and the food provided by the Pampa Senior Citizens Center. He and his wife moved to Amarillo in March 2001 to be near family in their later years.Mr. Maness was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; 5 sisters, Bessie Maness, Lettie Smith, Mary Stevens, Lessie Swain, and Lois Steward; by a brother, Archie Maness, and his precious granddaughter, Keitha Jo Davis.SURVIVORS: Son, Joe Gary Davis and wife Linda and daughter, Linda Autry and husband Dave, all of Amarillo; 7 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.The family expresses their gratitude to Dewain and Carolyn Callen of Amarillo, who have lovingly cared for him in their home for the past four years, and suggests memorials be made to Ronald McDonald House, 1501 Streit, Amarillo, TX 79106.
