He graduated from Miami High School in 1936 and from Texas A&M University in 1941. Wayne loved and supported A&M the rest of his life, seeing 21 family members attend the school. After graduation from A&M, he became the Assistant County Agent for Gray County and later the County Agriculture Agent for Moore County. It was while he was working in Moore County that he met and married Benonia Jeff Oxford on June 8, 1943 in Dumas. They were married for 62 years. Soon after their marriage, they moved to Miami and established a home on a ranch west of town, which later became known as the Maddox Hereford Ranch. Wayne raised and showed registered Hereford cattle throughout the United States. He was president of the Texas Hereford Breeders Association and for many years was active in the cattle division of the Amarillo Tri-State Fair and the Amarillo Live Stock Show. Wayne's early religious training began with his parents and brothers in a small country church called Salem. In 1937, he and his family joined the First Baptist Church in Miami where he was active in Sunday School, worship service, and where he served as a deacon for many years. Wayne was a godly man and a wonderful husband and father who will be sorely missed. He was actively involved in the Texas Baptist Men, leading many lay renewal meetings and serving as a director for many years. He was also active in the Gideon's International, speaking in many churches and distributing Bibles in schools, hospitals and nursing homes. Wayne was affiliated with the Panhandle-Plains Federal Land Bank for many years, beginning in the mid-1950's. He served as a director of the official board for 30 years. He and Mrs. Maddox moved to Amarillo in 2003 to make their home in the Continental Retirement Center at 1300 S. Jackson Street. At this stage in life, he did not expect to make many new friends, but was happy and blessed to gain an entire new family of friends in the residents and staff at the Continental.
