SERVICES: 2:00 PM Tuesday, June 17, 2003 in Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Jerome Humphrey, officiating.BURIAL: Miami CemeteryBIOGRAPHY: Mr. Slate was born Nov. 22, 1920 in Gouldbusk, Texas. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving during World War II, where he was awarded two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star. He married Gladys Carter in 1971, and she preceded him in death in 1994. He had been a resident of the Texas Panhandle for most of his life, living in Miami for the last 32 years. He was a building contractor and a member of the First Christian Church of Miami. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Cindy Deaver, in 1993.SURVIVORS: 3 sons: Elijah Slate, Jr. and M. C. Simpson, both of Pampa, and Tommy Gregory of Miami; 7 daughters: Carol Deaver and Punkin Gilleland, both of Pampa, Toni Slate, Sheila Williams, and Belinda Heiskell, all of Miami; Shirley Parent of Shreveport, LA and Linda Joy Payne of Owensboro, KY; 1 brother: Carl Wesley of Pampa; 21 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren.MEMORIALS: BSA Hospice, 800 N.
