SERVICES: 2:00 PM Saturday, February 22, 2003 at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel, with Jim Beam, Jr., minister of the Church of Christ at Waxahachie, officiating. <br><br>BURIAL: Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.<br><br>BIOGRAPHY: Mr. Melton was born June 6, 1922 at Cement, Oklahoma. He had been a resident of Pampa for over 60 years. He married Jean Vaughan in Waxahachie. She preceded him in death on October 17, 1993. He was a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps where he was attached to the Marines First Defense Battalion . He was assigned to military transportation and was awarded a Certificate of Satisfactory Service and Honorable Discharge button. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal Bar, Victory Medal World War II, and American Defense Medal. He served in the Asiatic Pacific area from February 22, 1941 until October 8, 1945. He participated in action against the enemy at Wake Island from December 8, 1941 until he was captured on December 23, 1941 and held prisoner by enemy Japanese forces until his release on September 2, 1945. He was a member of the Church of Christ, the VFW, National POW's, and Wake Island Defenders. He was the former owner of the Hide-Away Lounge. <br><br>SURVIVORS: 1 Nephew & Wife: Kenneth W. & Lynn Melton of Greensboro, North Carolina. 3 Step-Sons & Wives: Teddy & Mary Evelyn Vaughan and Eddie & Sissy Vaughan, all of Waxahachie, and Lonnie & Diane Vaughan of Pampa.
