Services will be at 2:00 PM Friday, November 16, 2012, at Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Pampa, Texas, with Eric Varnon, M.Div., officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery, with military honors courtesy of Altus AFB Blue Knights Honor Guard, Altus, Oklahoma. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Pampa. Mr. Varnon was born August 15, 1936 in Alvin, Texas to George W. and Eugenia M. Varnon. He married his high school sweetheart, Billie Gwyndolin Clay on March 7, 1955. He served his country by joining the U.S. Air Force in 1953. David became a crew chief on B-47 and B-52 bombers in SAC. He then went on to become an instructor at the B-52 school at Chanute AFB, Illinois. He was honorably discharged in June of 1962. David then joined the National Guard, working as a crew chief on the F-102 fighters. In December of 1966, he left the military but continued his aircraft career in the commercial airline industry as an aircraft mechanic. He worked for several airlines before retiring in 1999 from TWA in Kansas City, Missouri. He enjoyed many hobbies and always had a project or two to keep him busy. David was preceded in death by his parents.Survivors include his wife of 57 years: Gwyndolin Varnon; his son: David G. Varnon, II and wife Kathryn; his daughter: Rhonda L. Ray; 4 grandchildren: David W. Varnon, Elizabeth A. Varnon, Samantha Ray and Chevy Ray; a great-grandson Landon Ray; a sister: Ruby L. Biship; a brother: Alan Varnon and wife Peggy; his mother-in-law: Mary G. Clay-Andrews; 2 brothers-in-law: Claude Clay and wife Helen and Jerry Hollon and all of their respective families. Memorials may be offered to a VA Medical Center or charity of your choice.
