Jake W. Winborne, 86, died Friday, May 10, 2013, in Amarillo.Services will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, May 15, 2013, in Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Nancy Ruff, commissioned lay pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery.Mr. Winborne was born January 25, 1927 in Childress to Ernest and Maggie Winborne. The Winborne family moved to Pampa soon thereafter where Jake attended Horace Mann Elementary, Pampa Junior High, and Pampa High School. At the age of 17 and before finishing high school, Jake?s parents signed permission for him to enlist in the United States Navy in which he served honorably during World War II onboard a ship in the Pacific war front and received three meritorious medals. At the conclusion of the war, Jake returned to Pampa and began working for Skelly Oil Company and its later companies, Getty and Texaco, from which he retired after forty years. Jake was of the old work ethic that if you had a job, you showed up every day, and your worked your best, no excuses.Jake married Yvonne Guthrie on June 23, 1963 in Clayton, New Mexico, and they were about to celebrate their fiftieth anniversary when Yvonne passed away on April 7, 2013. He loved fishing and watching his favorite teams, the Texas Rangers and the Dallas Cowboys. In addition to his wife, Jake was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charles.Survivors include two sons, Tommy Winborne and fianc?e Sue Garner of Pampa and Barry Winborne and wife Donna of Arlington; a grandson, Brent James Winborne of Kingsville; an uncle, Alton Winborne of Pampa; two cousins, Rodnie Winborne and wife Kathy and Danny Winborne and wife Susan, all of Pampa; and by a sister-in-law, Wanda Passmore, of Pampa.The family wishes to express their gratitude to the caring people of BSA Hospice in Amarillo and Shepard?s Crook Home Health Care of Pampa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Harrington Cancer Foundation for BSA Hospice patients, 1600 Wallace Blvd., Amarillo, TX 79106 or Shepard?s Crook Home Health Care, 916 N. Crest Rd., Pampa, TX 79065.
