James L. "Stogie" Stalls

James L. (Stogie) Stalls, 91, of Amarillo and formerly of White Deer, entered the Kingdom of Heaven on June 20, 2014 in Amarillo. Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM Monday, June 23, 2014, at Fairview Cemetery in Pampa, with Rev. Thacker Haynes, pastor of United Methodist Church of McLean, officiating. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Pampa. Stogie was born in Deport on October 23, 1922 to Lundy and Elsa Stalls. The family relocated to Pampa when Stogie was at a young age, and eventually settled in White Deer. Stogie graduated from White Deer High School and entered Texas Tech University. His college education was interrupted by World War 2. Stogie joined the Navy and served as an aviation radio operator in the South Pacific. After the war, he returned to Texas Tech where he was a member of the Saddle Tramps. While in college, he met and married Maureen Smith on August 22, 1947. After receiving a degree, he returned to White Deer where he farmed and ranched for more than 60 years. Stogie was involved in various organizations such as the White Deer Riding Club, the American Legion and attended the Presbyterian Church. He was well respected as a cattleman and horse trader. He promoted quarter horses and was honored by the American Quarter Horse Association for his breeding of Quarter Horses. Stogie moved to Amarillo in 1990 where he resided until the time of his death. Stogie was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Maureen; a granddaughter, Whitney Guthrie; a brother, W. D. (Bill) Stalls; a sister, Mary Helen Wooten. Survivors include a son, Randy Stalls and wife Bobbi of McLean; a daughter, Konye Guthrie and husband Doug of Fort Worth; two grandsons, Shandon Stalls and wife Larenda of McLean, and Matt Guthrie of Austin; a granddaughter Shaley Fuller and husband Jerrod of Amarillo. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Slayde Stalls, Kesslye and Kallym Fuller. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
