Jack D. Bailey

March 30, 1940 — July 9, 2014

Jack D. Bailey, 74, of Pampa, died July 9, 2014 in Pampa. Graveside services will be at 11:30 AM Friday, July 11, 2014, at Hillcrest Cemetery in McLean. Memorial services will be at 3:00 PM Friday at First United Methodist Church in Pampa, with John Curry, Rev. Dr. Jerry R. Lane, pastor of United Methodist Church of White Deer, and Rev. Dr. Ran Loy, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Pampa, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Jackie Don Bailey was born March 30, 1940 in McLean to Jack and Lorena Bailey. He completed his elementary and high school years in McLean and attended McMurry University and Panhandle Oklahoma State University where he played basketball. He received his Master’s Degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Jack began his teaching and coaching career in Oklahoma, but soon moved back to Texas. He was superintendent at Allison, and his remaining professional career was with Pampa ISD, retiring after 40 years. He began at Robert E. Lee Junior High School as a teacher and coach, and then became vice principal and later principal. He was Travis Elementary School principal for a number of years before becoming director of personnel and then assistant superintendent. Jack loved to tease and cut-up. He had a gift for making people of all ages feel comfortable and was always good for a laugh. He will long be remembered by his students and teachers, as he wanted only the best for them. He gave special attention to many, some by playing basketball with them at lunch time in the gym, or going into the classroom and entertaining them with his flute-a-phone. He was a member of the Pampa Kiwanis Club and the First United Methodist Church where he held numerous offices in each, and he was a member of the Aldersgate Sunday school class. He was also a volunteer with Good Samaritan Christian Services. Jack left this earthly life knowing to be absent of the body is to be present with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Lorena, two brothers, Melvin Bailey and Charles Bailey, and nephew David Johnson. Survivors include his wife, Jo Bailey of the home; three daughters, Leslie Bailey of New York, Jennifer Bailey of Canyon, and Angie Ware and husband Kent of Wheeler. Jack had four grandchildren and he was so very proud of them. They include Jake and Levi Ware of Wheeler, and Sydney and Rion Rodriguez of Canyon. Other survivors include his sister, Jan Haynes of Pampa; his brother, Vestal Bailey and his wife Pat of McLean; two sisters-in-law, Jeanne Bailey of Pampa and Mary Ann Bailey of Lubbock; and numerous nieces and nephews, all who adored him.
