Doris Fay Gage, a former Pampa resident, died August 7, 2014 in Garland, after a short but valiant battle with a very vigorous form of cancer. Memorial services will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 30, 2014, at Mary Ellen & Harvester Church of Christ in Pampa, with Glen Walton, associate minister of San Jacinto Church of Christ of Amarillo, officiating. Doris and her twin brother, Dwaine, were born August 28, 1925 in Butler, OK. She met her future husband, Lyle, while studying cosmetology at Southwestern State College in Weatherford, OK. They married in August of 1947 and moved to the Texas Panhandle in 1951 following Lyle’s graduation from pharmacy school. They moved to Pampa in 1954 where they remained until 1999 when they moved to Garland to be close to family. Along with her husband Lyle and thorough cooperation with Gray County Child Protective Services and High Plains Children's Home in Amarillo, they served as foster parents to near 200 children for various time periods ranging from a few hours to a few years. She was the recipient of Pampa's first Woman of the Year award for her work in caring for foster children. She was recognized as an accomplished cook and seamstress and enjoyed sewing for anyone, but especially for her children and foster children. After 40 plus years of being a homemaker and all of her children being out of the house, she joined her husband in operation of HiLand Pharmacy where she assisted customers, made deliveries and did whatever was needed. She had a great fondness for dolls and amassed a large collection over the years including some she made herself, painting the porcelain face and hands and sewing the body. Doris was preceded in death by her husband Lyle, her son Phil and granddaughter Rachel, as well as her parents, 2 sisters and 4 brothers. She is survived by her children, Lyla Godfrey and husband Jon of Garland, Jimmy Gage and wife Debbie of Okarche, OK, Debby Gage of Coppell, TX, Nick Gage and wife Susan of Sugar Hill, GA, and special foster son, Ken Johnson and wife Kim of Pampa; 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and many special friends from the Pampa area. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to High Plains Children’s Home, 11461 S. Western Street, Amarillo, Texas 79118.
