Charles Mills "Chuck" White

Services will be at 4:30 PM Tuesday, September 2, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Jim Friedewald, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Chuck was born August 24, 1927 in Boston, MA to Verta Mills White and George Roland White, both deceased. He lived in Swampscott, MA and attended public schools until 1941. He then attended St. Christophers in Richmond, VA when his father was moved there for business. Chuck then returned to Swampscott in 1942. In the spring of 1944 he enrolled in Culver Military Academy in Illinois and graduated in 1945. He then attended Williams College in the summer of 1945, and enlisted in V5 Navy Officer Training in June, was activated early August in Hanover, NH. He attended Dartmouth College for one year under the V5 program. He then returned to Williams College and graduated in 1949. In December 1951 Chuck was recalled to the Navy as an engineer stationed in Glenview, IL Naval air station. He was flown to Japan to board USS Mt. McKinley at Yokosuka for 18 months, and then was assigned to maneuvers off Korea until the end of the war. Chuck worked for B F Goodrich in Watertown, MA until December 1951. He met and married Eleanor "Babs" Morgan on September 24, 1950 in Darien, CT. They had three sons, Gregory Mills White in 1952, Douglas Morgan White in 1954, and Scott Britton White in 1958. Eleanor preceded him in death on June 27, 1993 after 43 years of marriage. In Chuck's own words, "he then fell in love with his sister-in-law, Phyllis D. White, got her to move to Pampa, and they lived happily ever after in this wonderful area.” They married December 11, 1993 and enjoyed 20 wonderful years of marriage. Phyllis has four children, Christie Mills White, George Roland White, Jr. (deceased), Steven Darling White, and Allen Jarvie White. Chuck's business career began in 1953 with Cabot Corporation in Pampa. He then moved with the firm to Dallas, TX from 1956-66, moved to Andover, MA in for one year as Regional Manager, and returned to Pampa in 1967 with Cabot Engineering Division. He retired from IRI (subsequent owner of Cabot) as Senior Vice President of Marketing in December, 1994. Chuck was very active in this community he loved, and served on numerous Boards and committees. He was elder and trustee of First Presbyterian Church, chairman, and twice as drive chairman, of the United Way Board, chairman of Pampa Chamber of Commerce, president of Pampan’s for Progress, and president of Pampa Country Club. He also served on the Pampa Center Foundation, and was instrumental in bringing in the Pampa branch of Clarendon College. He was a board member of South Side Senior Citizens, founding board member of Hospice of Pampa, and Tri-State Seniors Golf Association. He raised funds for Boy Scouts of America, and the Pampa Super Playground. He was honored as Pampa Chamber Citizen of the Year in 1999, and Rotarian of the Year in 2000. Chuck was an avid golfer and member of Pampa Country Club where he played regularly in the Thursday night scramble. At Tedesco Country Club in Marblehead, MA he held the course record for lowest score for 28 years. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Darling White of the home, and three sons: Gregory Mills White and wife Martha of Lubbock, Douglas Morgan White and wife Darla of Amarillo, and Scott Britton White and wife Jamie of Pampa; plus nieces and nephews/step-children Christie Mills White of West Milton, Vermont, Steven Darling White and wife Meg of Marblehead, Massachusetts, and Allen Jarvie White and wife Gina of Riverside, California, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
