Thelma Jean Carter, 86, of Pampa, died October 30, 2016 in Dumas, surrounded by family and friends. Services will be 10:00 AM Friday, November 4, 2016, at Fellowship Baptist Church, with Rev. Joel Osborne, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mrs. Carter was born January 8, 1930 in Gray County in the McLean area. She had been a resident of Pampa most of her life, attending Pampa schools. Thelma married R. E. McCain on February 14, 1947 in Pampa. She later married Otto Carter and he preceded her in death. She worked at Alco for several years before working for American National Life Insurance Company until retiring. Thelma had been a member of Fellowship Baptist Church since 1957. She enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling, church hymns, attending church activities, and she loved family gatherings. Survivors include a daughter, Lavonna Thornburg and husband Ellis of Dumas; two sons, Ronnie McCain and wife Carol of Pampa, and Kevin McCain and wife Cathy of Lake Jackson; five grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Sandy. Thelma was also preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Wessie McDowell; four brothers, three sisters and four grandsons. Memorials may be made to Fellowship Baptist Church, 622 E. Francis, Pampa, Texas 79065; or Memorial Hospice, attn. Ken Shore, 224 E. 2nd Street, Dumas, Texas 79029. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM Thursday, November 3, 2016 at Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.
