Jack Chisum

February 1, 1936 — November 11, 2016

Jack Chisum, 80, of Pampa, died Friday, Nov. 11, 2016, in Amarillo. Graveside services will be at 1:00 PM Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016, at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Celebration of life services will follow at 2:00 PM Tuesday at First Christian Church with Rev. Dr. Jeff Knighton, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mr. Chisum was born Feb. 1, 1936 in Miami to A. W. and Evelyn Chisum and was a 1954 graduate of Lefors High School. He attended Texas Tech where he was on the university’s first swim team. Jack was also the first Red Cross water safety instructor in Gray County. He married Dorothy Benham on Aug. 12, 1955 at First Christian Church in Pampa where he has been a member since that time. Jack was very active in the church, serving as elder, deacon, youth group sponsor, and member and chairman of the board of directors. He was a member of Top O’ Texas Masonic Lodge #1381 AF & AM and was a member of Khiva Shrine Temple in Amarillo. He also served as a Boy Scout leader for several years. Jack began his professional career in 1957 with Thurmond-McGlothlin where he later became a partner. The partnership has expanded to include Energy Meter Service, operating in both Oklahoma and Colorado. In 1976, Jack began his flying career, and he was privileged to transport many patients and families during their time of need. He loved flying his Beechcraft Bonanza, enjoyed gardening and taking care of his pond, spending time with his dog, Cocoa, traveling with his wife, and most of all, spending time with his family and grandchildren. One of Jack’s greatest accomplishments was when he bought a Wang computer with programming books and taught himself to program computers. Jack prided himself on staying up to date with technology, and it was an honor for him to speak at the International School of Hydrocarbon Measurements for several years. Jack loved his work and treated his employees just as family. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of the home; 2 daughters, Dana Cargill and husband Ken and Carla Chisum, all of Amarillo; a brother, Warren Chisum and wife Omega of Pampa; 2 sisters, Gertrude Weikel and husband Barry of Austin and Ruth Carter and husband Jerry of Howardwick; grandchildren, Cameron Cargill and wife Candace of Amarillo and Jacklyn Cargill of Roanoke, Virginia; and a great grandson due in January, Jack Wyatt Cargill. Jack was preceded in death by his parents. Memorials may be made to Las Pampas Pond and Garden Club.
