"Helene" Louise Baumgardner

January 4, 1919 — November 15, 2016

"Helene" Louise Baumgardner, 97, went to be with the Lord on November 15, 2016. She died of natural causes at Vibra Hospital in Amarillo. Services will be 10:00 AM Friday, November 18, 2016, at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel, with Rev. Dr. Jeff Knighton, pastor of First Christian Church, officiating. Entombment will follow in Memory Gardens Mausoleum under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Helene was born January 4, 1919 in Kansas City, Missouri to Louis R. "Shorty” Miller and Lola Brock Miller. The family moved to Borger in 1926, and then to Pampa in 1935. She married Charles Frost Madeira in 1937 and later married G. B. Hogan in 1959. Charles Madeira was the maternal grandson of William "Uncle Billy" Frost who was well known in Pampa and lived to be 104. Charles and Helene were very active in the First Christian Church where Charles served as the choir director. They had three sons, Robert, Bill and Terry. She later married Carl Baumgardner in 1998. Carl passed away in 2011. Helene taught dancing for 25 years, starting in Borger at the age of 16. She ran a very successful dance school-kindergarten, Helene Madeira School of Dance and Peter Pan Kindergarten in Pampa at Cuyler Street and Browning Avenue, (the site of a previous Blackburn-Shaw funeral home). She taught kindergarten for 10 years. In the 1950's, she owned Helene's Hat Shop in Downtown Pampa and had a weekly radio fashion show on KPDN. She also wrote a fashion column in the Pampa Daily News. Helene went to business school after graduating from Pampa High School, and also graduated from the Arthur Murray School of Dance in Chicago. Helene was very outgoing, friendly and was a member of many social organizations. She was honored for being a member of The Homemaker Extension for 70 years, a charter member of Hospital Auxiliary, Altrusa International, Pampa Senior Citizens, Civic Culture Club, Gray County Extension Club, The Red Hats, and in 1985 was named "Notable Women of Texas" for achievements and contributions to the community. Members at the Senior Citizens Club would send Helen over to talk to new faces and find out who they were. Helene was known for calling everyone "honey" and making them feel welcome. Helene had a marvelous memory and stayed very sharp mentally. She and Carl Baumgardner were like an encyclopedia of people in Pampa. Helene is preceded in death by her sister Eleanor "Mae" Browning in 2016; and two brothers, William and George Miller. She is survived by three sons Robert Kent Madeira, William Brent Madeira and Terry Charles Madeira, all of Houston; 3 daughters-in-law, Evelyn "Sissie" Madeira, Linda Madeira and Karen Hubert Madeira; six grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren, a niece, Margie Paucell and husband Alvin of Borger; and a nephew Richard Browning and wife Kathy of Borger. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, 1633 N. Nelson, Pampa, Texas 79065 or Pampa Senior Citizens Center, PO Box 475, Pampa, Texas 79066-0475.
