Joe E. Burton

Joe E. Burton, 85, of Morton, and formerly of Pampa, passed away June 26, 2017 in Lubbock. Services will be at 10:00 AM Thursday, June 29, 2017, at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel in Pampa, with John Schmidt, his son, officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens of Pampa. Services are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Pampa. Joe was born on September 14, 1931 in Weatherford, Oklahoma, to Opal and Edward Burton. He was raised and attended school in Darrouzett. After high school he attended West Texas State University in Canyon. After college, he went to work for his cousin, Dean Burger, on the Lazy 11 family ranch where he worked as a cowboy for many years. He eventually met and married Carolina Schmidt on June 3, 1961 in Pampa. A year later, Joe started farming and ranching his own land where he made many memories. He was a longtime and faithful member of Church of the Brethren where he served as the administrator/moderator and as a deacon. Joe was the last and remaining member of the church before it closed in 2007 and shortly after, he moved to Morton because of health reasons. Joe will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, cowboy, and friend, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Survivors include two sons, John Schmidt and wife Donna of Morton and Eddie Burton of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two sisters, Joyce Swope and husband Bob of Pampa and Zell Webster of Wichita, Kansas; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; and many cousins, nephews, nieces, and extended family. Joe was also preceded in death by his parents, his wife Carolina, a granddaughter Alicia Carvajal, a nephew AJ Swope and by his favorite horse, Ramrod.
