Barbara Lee Vanderpool

Barbara Lee Vanderpool, 95, of Pampa, passed away Friday, November 22, 2019, in Pampa.

Services will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 26, 2019, at First United Methodist Church with her sons, Judge Phil Vanderpool and Pat Vanderpool, officiating. Private burial will be Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Sunset Memorial Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.

Mrs. Vanderpool was born Aug. 7, 1924 in Joplin, Missouri to Keith Robert and Leona Fay Runner Tharp. She attended schools in Dallas and attended Southwestern University in Georgetown. Barbara married Dr. Harry Vanderpool on July 6, 1947 in Dallas. He preceded her in death on Jan. 15, 1992.

Harry and Barbara pastored Methodist churches in Dallas, Littlefield, Snyder, Pampa, Polk Street in Amarillo, and Central and First United Methodist Churches, both in Albuquerque. She was very active in the children’s departments at all the churches they served. In 2008, Barbara returned to Pampa where she was a very active member of First United Methodist Church of Pampa. She was a member of the 21st Century Study Club and PEO. Barbara loved her garden and had an extensive garden at her home in Pampa.

She is survived by two sons, Judge Phil Vanderpool and wife Gladys of Pampa, and Pat Vanderpool of Tucumcari, New Mexico; a granddaughter, Catherine Vanderpool of Norman, Oklahoma; two grandsons, Stephen Vanderpool and wife Brooke of Groom and Keith Vanderpool of Amarillo; a great grandson, Lincoln Vanderpool of Groom; by three nieces, Laura Tharp, Val King, and Carol Luscomb and husband Burl, all of Dallas; and by a close friend and caregiver, Dora Bustamante, of Pampa. Barbara was also preceded in death by a sister, Jo Brian, and by a brother, K. R. Tharp.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Sissy, Interim Hospice, and all of Barbara’s other caregivers for their loving care and friendship to Barbara over the last several months.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, PO Box 1981, Pampa, TX 79066-1981.

The family will receive friends from 5:30-7:00 PM Monday at Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Home.
