Bob R. Carmichael

Bob R. Carmichael, 95, of Pampa, passed away on Monday, July 25, 2022, in Pampa.

Services will be at 11:00 AM Friday, July 29, 2022, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jarrod Neal, pastor, and John Curry, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory. The funeral service will be livestreamed on the funeral home website.


Bob was born May 31, 1927 in Hillsboro, Texas to Paul and Myrle Chambers Carmichael. The family moved to Pampa in 1930 from Waxahachie, Texas. He attended Pampa schools, graduating from Pampa High School in 1945. Upon graduation, he served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. Bob then attended Texas Tech where he received a BBA degree in 1950, and he graduated from the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science in 1951. He married Virginia Platt on September 3, 1949 in Fort Worth. In 1951, Bob began his career in funeral service at Duenkel-Carmichael Funeral Home in Pampa and, in 1965, he became a partner in Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors along with his father, Paul, and Herman Whatley. He retired in 1997 after 46 years in funeral service. He was a recipient of the Funeral Director of the Year award by the Panhandle Funeral Directors Association. Bob was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church where he served on and chaired every church committee. He was a member of the Pampa Sheltered Workshop Board for over 35 years and was instrumental in getting the new workshop building constructed. Bob served as a member of the Pampa Independent School Board for several years. He was a past president and former member of Downtown Kiwanis Club for many years, and he was a charter member of Top O’ Texas Masonic Lodge #1381 and was a member of the El Paso Scottish Rite Consistory.


Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and by a son, Mark Allen Carmichael, in 1957.


He is survived by his wife, Virginia, of the home; a son, Doug Carmichael and wife Sara of Pampa; a daughter, Ann Holloway and husband John of Dallas; two granddaughters, Ann Harter and husband Eric of Arlington, VA and Lee Evans and husband Dr. Will Evans of Augusta, GA; and by three great granddaughters, Elizabeth and Katherine Evans, and Grace Harter.


The family would like to thank the staffs at Interim Healthcare, Pampa Regional Medical Center, and Pampa Nursing Center for Bob’s excellent care.
