Dan was born on September 10, 1943, in Childress, Texas to Daniel and Opal Mahanay. He grew up and attended schools in Pampa, graduating from Pampa High School in 1962. Immediately after high school, Dan enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served from 1962 to 1966 and was in Vietnam for one year of his service. Dan was honorably discharged in July of 1966 with the ranking of AFR 45-43.

After serving in the military, Dan returned to Pampa. He attended classes at Clarendon College, where he received his associate degree. Many years later, Dan returned to school and enrolled at WT in Canyon. He graduated in 2010 having earned his BBA in General Business. He retired in 2005.

During his free time, Dan stayed very busy. He loved to fly privately and had several friends at the Perry-Lefors Airport in Pampa. Dan made several drives back and forth to Marlin, Texas as well to visit his love of 22 years, Heidi Chronister. Heidi was his life, and the two loved each other very much. He considered each part of Heidi’s family as his own family and would do anything for them. Dan enjoyed reading books of all kinds. He would travel all over Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado to shop at different book sales. Above all, Dan was a kind, generous, and loving man who cared greatly for those around him. He will be deeply missed by everyone that knew him.
