Doris "Jean" Jones

August 1, 1933 — November 6, 2022

Doris “Jean” Jones, 89, of Amarillo, and formerly of Pampa, passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2022, in Amarillo.

Memorial services will be 2:00 PM Monday, November 21, 2022, at First United Methodist Church with John Curry officiating, assisted by Rev. Jarrod Neal, pastor of First United Methodist Church. Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.

Jean was born August 1, 1933, in Pampa, where she lived for 84 years. She met her husband Frank “Wayne” Jones at church camp in Oklahoma. They fell in love, he followed her home to Pampa, and there they stayed for most of their lives. They were married at the Church of the Brethren parsonage in Pampa in April of 1954. They were married for 54 years until Wayne’s death in 2008.

Jean worked at Bell Telephone for some years and Wayne worked at Cabot Corporation. In later years, she worked for Walter Caldwell and Bill Chambliss at their respective tax firms. Jean and Wayne loved to travel and visited many areas in the U.S., as well as Great Britain, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the Soviet Union. Later in life, they discovered a passion for golf which led to many happy years of playing and vacationing with friends.

Jean was a woman that loved to stay busy, and she devoted much of her life to volunteering. She led Girl Scouts, taught swimming lessons, delivered Meals on Wheels, volunteered at the First United Methodist Church and the Tralee Crisis Center, drove cancer patients to appointments, and worked the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Walks.

Jean loved reading and gaining knowledge and derived great pleasure belonging to the Twentieth Century Culture Club, as well as her book club. She greatly valued her friendships formed over the years, including the women of the widows group, the RV club in Pampa, and a 69-year-long round-robin letter with six friends from McPherson College in Kansas.

Jean is the beloved mother of Pam Minchin, Connie Jones, and Tim Jones (Katie). She has six cherished grandchildren: Ryan Chisum (Lauren), Marlee Kennedy (Justin), Sydney Minchin, Maina Minchin, Andrew Jones, and Daniel Jones. Jean felt blessed to also have three great-grandchildren: Caden Kennedy, Harper Kennedy and Ren Chisum.

Jean – “Nana” to all her grand and great-grandchildren – will always be known for passing along many of the simple but wonderful pleasures in life: baking pies and cookies, a love of flowers (especially lilacs), the wonders of coffee, games, and puzzles of all kinds, reading, soup on a cold day, and the magnificence of cats. Her wit and humor were a hallmark of her kind and intelligent character, and she kept them to the end. She is greatly loved and will be missed by many.

The family is grateful to Bivens Pointe and The Ware at Park Central for the kind care they gave our mother.
