Doug DuBose, revered pastor, former area missionary, and good friend to many, passed away Thursday, December 26, 2018. He was a vibrant 97 years old.
Services will be 10:00 AM Friday, January 4, 2019 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Byron Williamson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be 9:00 AM Tuesday January 8, 2019 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.
He was greeted by his sweet wife, Nina Sparks DuBose, having gone ahead in 2009. They had been married 66 years. He missed her every day.
Doug was born in West Columbia and grew up in the oilfields of Central Texas. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and served in the Southwest Pacific and then the occupation of Japan. He reached the rank of First Sergeant with 24 Master Sergeants reporting to him. Two years at Texas A&M prepared him for his service.
On his return to civilian life in in 1946, he worked in the oilfield and running a “filling station” in Luling. God called him to the ministry and he was ordained in 1949, serving 70 years in God’s service.
He graduated from Howard Payne College in 1952, then Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary in 1955 while pastoring rural churches. He served congregations in Mercury, Concord, Yuba, Oklahoma, Johnson City, Eldorado, Amarillo, and Muleshoe before becoming Director of Missions to the Top O’ Texas area in 1974. He preached in over 200 pulpits, 27 countries, and in 43 states.
Doug continued his service by teaching Everyman’s Sunday school class until recently and supporting the Pampa community by designing and being the general contractor for the clubhouse at Hidden Hills Municipal Golf Course.
His sons, Ted DuBose of Pampa, Roy DuBose of Ft. Worth, and Max DuBose and wife Jeana of Onalaska remain, as does his sister Delta Gillam of San Antonio, along with 5 grandsons and 9 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his close friend and companion, Patricia Flynt of Arlington.
