George Buell Collingsworth, 78, of Pampa, passed away December 14, 2018 in Amarillo.
Services will be 10:00 AM Monday, December 17, 2018 at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel, with Pastor Gary Snider, of Northgate Discipleship Center, officiating. Full military honors will be accorded by Pampa VFW Post #1657, and cremation will follow the services. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.
George was born April 16, 1940 in Sulphur Springs, Arkansas to John and Katherine Collingsworth. He was raised in Oregon where he proudly served his country, joining the Navy in 1958 and served in Southeast Asia. He was honorably discharged in 1964. After his military service, he settled in Pampa, and he attended West Texas State University in Canyon. George had a brief stint working at Cabot Carbon Black and then moved on to Celanese in 1966; he retired as an operator in 2000 after 34 years of service. George loved his motorcycle and traveling from Alaska to the Caribbean. He was very active in the VFW Post #1657, where he headed up the Voice of Democracy scholarship program and chaired the VFW Assistance Program. George also assisted many families honoring their veterans and providing military honors at funerals. All in all, George was an advocate for veterans and anyone in need.
George married Alice Thompson on Dec. 4, 2016 in Laughlin, Nevada. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Tim, and a sister, Ruth.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Collingsworth of the home; four sons, Brian Collingsworth of Hereford, John Collingsworth and wife Keri of Lubbock, Kevin Collingsworth of Pampa, and Justin Collingsworth and wife Lori of McLean, Virginia; two stepdaughters, Donna Caskey and husband Mike of Pampa; Staci Brantwein and husband Bobby of Thomas, Oklahoma; a stepson, Rick Thompson and wife Lucy of Harrah, Oklahoma; fourteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and two great great grandsons.
