Jerry was born on March 10, 1944, in Wheeler to Travis and Rosalie Keelin. He attended school in Briscoe, graduating in 1962. After graduating, Jerry worked with his father-in-law in the carpentry business for S.L. Smith & Sons. Later, he attended electrical trade school classes at Amarillo College. He would take any electronics that he found to his home and either repair them or tear them down for parts. He also loved music. He could play the piano and guitar by ear, and he would also DJ at local events and country clubs. Jerry always enjoyed his lake days with the family and would go fishing, hunting, or golfing any chance he got. In his later years, he enjoyed the simple things, like staying home with his dog, Scooter, and watching wrestling matches on TV.
