John A. Dawes

John A Dawes, 93, of Pampa passed away Wednesday, December 18, 2019 in Pampa.

Services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Pastor Mike Watson of Calvary Baptist Church in Dumas, officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.

Mr. Dawes was born June 23, 1926 in Craig County, Oklahoma to Loyd and Ola Dawes. He attended rural schools in Craig County, Oklahoma and joined the U. S. Army in 1944. John served in Korea and was honorably discharged in 1946. After his service, he graduated from welding school in Tulsa, Oklahoma. John moved to Pampa in 1948 and joined the Plumber and Steamfitters Union 196, welding on silos, commercial construction, power plants and pipelines. He married Nina Pearl Maple, his childhood sweetheart, on January 22, 1953 in Clovis, New Mexico. She passed away in 2011. After John’s retirement in 1998, he enjoyed welding for friends and family, going fishing, cooking, making peanut brittle and tending to his productive backyard garden. John was a member of Hobart Baptist Church.

John was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Art Dawes; and a sister, Virginia Dawes Teeters.

Survivors include a son, Henry Dawes and wife Marian of Pampa; a daughter, Shirley Bray of Amarillo; a brother, Bill Dawes and wife Vonie of Guymon, Oklahoma; a sister, Joann Koelzer of Pampa; five grandchildren, Windy Bray, Jarrett Bray, Nathan Dawes, Shawn Dawes and Jessica Dawes; eight great grandchildren, Raiden and Gavin Bray, Lincoln Dawes, Kaitlin, Victoria and Hanah Dawes, and Kamber and Aston Dawes.

The family will receive friends from 5:30-7:00 PM Friday, December 20, 2019, at Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.
