Martha L. Hunter Hadley

Martha L. Hunter Hadley, 91, of Amarillo, TX, formerly of Pampa, TX, passed away on Saturday December 1, 2018 at BSA Hospice of the Southwest in Amarillo.

Services will be 2:00 PM Friday December 7, 2018 in the Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Rev. Lynn Hancock, pastor of Briarwood Church, officiating.  Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.

Martha was born June 1, 1927 to Ralph & Agnes Saunders Hunter in Kansas City, KS. Martha lost her mother at the tender age of eight, after which she and her brothers went to live with different family members in KS and CO.  At one time, in her youth, Martha lived in a boxcar.

She graduated from high school in Fort Lupton, CO in 1946.  She went to work in a café in Zurich, KS where she met Don Hadley.  They married in July of 1946.  Together, they had 3 sons and the family moved from Kansas to Pampa in 1964. Don and Martha were divorced in 1979.

Martha worked at the fountain inside ME Moses for several years, where she was known as “The Flower Lady”.  She then went to work for Pampa ISD and retired from there as the cafeteria manager for Horace Mann Elementary School.  Upon retirement, she and good friend, Ruby Killough, had a hamburger wagon they took to all of the Lyndon Loyd Auctions.

Martha was very active in several civic organizations, including Clean Pampa, Panhandle Piecemakers Quilt Guild, Girl Scouts, 4-H, and the VFW Auxiliary.   She was also an active member of her church, Calvary Assembly of God and the WM’s program there.  Martha was also honored to take part in the creation of several Quilts of Valor.

She, single handedly, tried to eradicate all the bindweed in Pampa, TX and never drove by a coke can that she didn’t stop and pick up for recycling.

If you ever had her World-Famous Chocolate Sheet Cake or Red-Hot Salad, you were blessed.  But, then again, her cinnamon rolls weren’t anything to let pass you by.

Martha is survived by her three sons, Bob Hadley and wife Bernita of Thornton, CO; Larry Hadley and wife Joyce of Pampa, TX, and Ronnie Hadley and wife Renel of Amarillo, TX; one brother, Enoch “Amos” Hunter of CA; seven grandchildren, Rick Howard of Borger, TX, Lance and Ezra Hadley of Amarillo, TX, Rob and Juliana Hadley of Salt Lake City, UT, Tish Hadley of Amarillo, TX and Hunter Hadley of Amarillo, TX; one great grandchild Samuel Hadley of Salt Lake City, UT; one great, great grandchild, Chloe Howard of Pampa, TX; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Agnes; one brother, Ralph Hunter Jr.; one grandson, Jerry Lynn Howard; and a granddaughter-in-law, Pat Howard.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM Thursday December 6, 2018 at Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.
