Pampa

Mary Howell, 92, of Pampa, passed away on April 18, 2025, at her home, with her loving family by her side.

Graveside services will be 10:00 AM, Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at the Memory Gardens Mausoleum with Rick Pearson, officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.

Mary was born on July 6, 1932, in Norwood, Georgia to Dupree Cary and Villa Smith. She grew up and attended school in Georgia. Shortly after the war, she married her childhood sweetheart, Jessie Howell and they married on May 30, 1948, in Thompson, Georgia. They would travel and live in various places with his service in the U.S. Navy. They would begin their family by having five children and share 49 years of marriage before Jessie’s passing in 1997.

Mary would live in Florida before she moved to Pampa to be closer to family. She and Jessie came to Pampa in 1982 and remained since. While in Pampa, she became a long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and sang in their choir. Mary’s faith was paramount to her, and she loved her Lord and tried hard to bring anyone she knew to Christ. As a mother, she participated in the PTA, sponsored the band, and volunteered in several ways. She was a godly and giving woman who will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Kathy Reeves; and by five siblings.

Mary is survived by four children, Ronald Howell and wife Sandra, David Howell and wife Carol, Karen Hapeman and husband Wilbur, and Kristy Sturgill; grandchildren, Amy Grant and husband James, Amanda Smillie and husband Clint, Jackie Howell, Michael Howell, Amber Hamilton and husband Ronnie, Jonathon Sturgill and wife Abbi, and Nicole Sturgill; six great grandchildren; and other extended family.

The family would like to extend special thanks to all the beautiful ladies and the chaplain at Interim Hospice for their dedication to Mary’s health and well-being.
