Newton Dodd

July 16, 1945 — October 23, 2018

Newton Dodd, 73, of Pampa, went to see his Lord on October 23, 2018 in Pampa.

Memorial services will be 3:00 PM Saturday, November 3, 2018, at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel, with Rev. Richard Bartel, chaplain of BSA Hospice of the Southwest, and Greg Griffith, retired Lt. Colonel, officiating. Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.

Mr. Dodd, known as Newt, was a southern boy born July 16, 1945 in Atlanta, Georgia, to Marion Randolph and Nell Josephine Polsen Dodd. He would have been born earlier that day, but his parents were at a double header baseball game, and mom was determined to stay for the last pitch.

Newt grew up in Atlanta and spent a year at Mercer College in Macon, Georgia before joining the U. S. Army in 1966. He served a tour in Vietnam before returning to Memphis, Tennessee as a personnel clerk. According to Newt, the Army issued him a wife, Sgt. Linda Moore of Pampa, and they married on February 7, 1970 in Pampa.

Newt had several duty assignments during his 28 years of military service. His two most favorites were Germany where his son Ronald was born, and Reno, Nevada. He served as First Sgt. for both the 321st Signal Battalion and the 137th Transportation Company of CH-54’s (crane helicopters). He spent 13 years with these units and called those soldiers his brothers and sisters in arms, and his very best friends.

After his retirement, Newt moved to Phoenix, Arizona where he had various jobs, including head cook for the Arizona Diamondbacks Baseball Team, which he really enjoyed. In 2005, he moved to Pampa where he received his quilt of valor for his service.

Newt was preceded in death by his parents.

He leaves behind his wife, Linda Dodd of the home; a son, Ronald Dodd of Yuma, Arizona; granddaughter, Chelsea Dodd of Henderson, Nevada; two grandsons, Newt Dodd of Denver, Colorado, and Daniel Dodd of Milwaukie, Oregon; two brothers, Jerry Dodd and wife Sue of Littleton, Colorado, and Ronald Dodd and wife Marlene of Hiram, Georgia; and extended family and Army buddies around the world.

The family extends a very special thank you to the nurses, aides and chaplain of BSA Hospice of the Southwest. Newt truly loved each of you.

Memorials may be made to Central Baptist Church, 513 E. Francis, Pampa, Texas 79065; or the VFW Post 1657, PO Box 2684, Pampa, Texas 79066-2684.
