Orville William Whinery

Orville Whinery, 93, of Pampa, passed away August 20, 2020 in Pampa.

Graveside services will be 10:00 AM, Monday, August 24, 2020 at Memory Gardens Cemetery with Rev. Norman Rushing of Central Baptist Church, officiating. Burial and arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Military honors are courtesy of Pampa VFW Post #1657.

Orville was born on January 28, 1927 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Lona and Robert Whinery. He grew up and attended school in Oklahoma. After school he went into the Navy and served during WWII aboard the USS Makassar Strait and served through the Battle of Okinawa and Battle of Iwo Jima and was discharged as a Third-class Petty Officer.  After leaving the war he would marry the love of his life, Alice Wadsworth on September 16, 1946 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma and they shared almost 74 years before his passing.

In 1960, Orville and his family moved to Pampa and have remained ever since. He worked in trucking for JT Richardson and he also worked for the City of Pampa. In the 70’s and 80’s he found enjoyment with CB Radios. Music and religion were especially important to Orville and he found great joy when he was able to sing in the gospel band, Gloryland. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Mikey Anderson; two great-granddaughters, Alice Marie Taylor and Meredith Parks; by 4 brothers, Albert Leo “Cracker” Whinery, Paul Whinery, Bobby Whinery, Jr., and Thurman Whinery; by 3 sisters, Letha Belle Cado, Alice Elsworth, Pauline Whinery.

His survivors include his wife, Alice Whinery of the home; 5 daughters, Kathryn Harvey of Clovis, NM, Barbara Jean Owen of Amarillo, Linda Mae Crocker and husband Dwight, Mary Beatrice Couch and husband Al, and Letha Marie Adams and husband Jack, all of Pampa; 2 sons, Johnnie Whinery and wife Pam , and Orville Whinery, Jr. and wife Robin, all of Pampa; 2 brothers, Billy Whinery and wife Martha of Bartesville, OK and Gene Whinery and wife Thelma of Pawhuska, OK; 2 sisters, Roseanna Scarborough and Della Mae Cole, both of Chester, GA; 22 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and other extended family.
