Ray Covalt

Ray Covalt, 91, of Amarillo, formerly of Pampa, passed away on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 in Amarillo.

Private graveside services were held at 2:00 PM Friday, July 16, 2021 at Fairview Cemetery in Pampa under the of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.

Mr. Covalt was born February 8, 1930 in Woodward, Oklahoma to Lester and Bessie Inzer Covalt.  Ray graduated from Pampa High School in 1948.  He worked with his father at Covalt Construction and later took over the family business.  Ray built custom homes and commercial buildings throughout the Texas Panhandle and spent 15 years building in Canadian.  He married Jan Newsom on August 8, 1950 in Tucumcari, New Mexico.  Ray was a member of the Hidden Hills Senior Golf Association and played 3 times a week until the age of 87.  He loved refurbishing antique cars and drinking coffee at McDonald’s with friends.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents and his two sisters, Euleta Gardner and Geneva Michael.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Jan of the home; two daughters, Raynetta Earp and husband Wyatt of Amarillo and Shelly Watkins of Ft. Worth; five grandchildren, Jay Earp and wife Jennifer of Elmore City, Oklahoma, Jamie Winborne and husband Tommy of Pampa, Ross Watkins and wife Emmy of Brock, Allison Conti of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Blake Watkins and wife Amanda of Ft. Worth; and 9 great-grandchildren.
