Robert W. Dixon, Sr., 85, of Pampa, passed away March 28, 2018 in Pampa.
Services will be 10:00 AM Monday, April 2, 2018, at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel, with Rev. Norman Rushing, pastor of Central Baptist Church, and Pastor Terry Bradley, officiating. Cremation will follow the services under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.
Mr. Dixon was born November 25, 1932 in Enid, Oklahoma to Arthur and Gerlene Smith, and later adopted by his grandparents, Edgar and Pearl Dixon. He moved to Pampa in 1946. Robert graduated from Pampa High School in 1951 and attended Frank Phillips College in Borger. In 1953, he enlisted in the U. S. Army, serving for two years. On June 7, 1959, he married JoAnn Addington in Pampa. She preceded him in death on June 18, 2013.
Robert worked for Equifax from 1956 until he retired in 1991. After his retirement, he worked at Braum’s and Coronado Inn for several years before beginning his career as the Veteran’s Service officer for Gray County for many years. He had a passion for serving the City of Pampa. Robert was elected as City Commissioner, Ward 3, in the early 1990’s, and served for 26 years.
He was a member of the Pampa Optimist Youth Club since the 1960’s, serving as president. He coached and was in charge of several Optimist leagues. Robert was an avid Boston Red Sox and OU fan. He enjoyed all kinds of movies, attending the TCM Film Festival in Hollywood for the past 3 years with his son, Robert Jr, and a special nephew, Brad “Chip” Pope. He loved his family and loved spending time with them. He enjoyed being PaPa to his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family offers a special thanks to his friend, Darby Sweet, for being such a great neighbor.
Survivors include his son, Robert Wayne Dixon, Jr. and wife Debbie of Pampa; grandchildren, Lindsey Wall and husband Dustin, Robbie Dixon and wife Amber, Jessie Dixon and Bailey Dixon, all of Amarillo, Brandon Dixon and fiancée Anna of Great Falls, Montana, Melissa Dixon and Hunter of Tyler, Daniella Dixon of Lindale, Matt Driscoll of Wichita Falls, Chris Driscoll and Christian, and Destiny Mulanax and husband Jason, all of Pampa; great grandchildren, Aubree Wall and Berklee Wall, both of Amarillo, Henley Dixon (due in July), Ashlynn Mulanax, Halie Mulanax, Chevelle Mulanax, Jaxxom Mulanax, and Ryatt Driscoll, all of Pampa, and Luke Phillips of Tyler; cousins, Jerry Pope and wife Dietta of Pampa, Charles Pope and wife Frances of Amarillo; a special nephew, Brad “Chip” Pope of West Hollywood, California; daughter-in-law, Doreen Dixon of Lindale.
Robert was also preceded in death by a son, Chris Dixon; daughter, Kim Dixon Fitzer; and his parents.
