Roland West

January 26, 1935 — February 27, 2018

Roland Glenn West, 83, went to be with the Lord on February 27, 2018 in Pampa.

Services will be at 10:00 AM Friday, March 2, 2018, at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel, with Rev. Albert Maggard, pastor of First Pentecostal Holiness Church, and Rev. Ronnie Ferguson officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in McLean under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.

Mr. West was born January 26, 1935 in Erick, Oklahoma, a twin to the late Robert West. They were the first set of twins born to Charlie and Ina West and the youngest boys of twelve children. The family moved to McLean which is where he met his wife, Dixie Hampton. They were married in 1955 in Clovis, New Mexico. They began their married life in McLean, and in October 1955, they moved to Pampa where they remained for their 62 year marriage. In the early years of their marriage, Mr. West worked as manager of Henderson Wilson Service station. In 1963 he began working for Cabot Corporation, managing their motor pool for 19 years, and driving over 1 million miles between Pampa and the airport in Amarillo.  He finished his career at Ingersoll Rand where he worked for 16 years, retiring in 1997.

He was well known for his charisma and ability to make friends with people from all walks of life. This trait served him particularly well during his years at Cabot Corporation, and he counted among his friends company executives from such far-flung locations as Israel, Venezuela, and India.  His greatest affection, however, was for his family, and his grandchildren and later great-grandchildren who were truly enamored of their grandpa Roland.  He was fond of music and known for his fine voice. As a child, he sang with his twin brother Robert and twin sisters Mattie and Mary, including being broadcast over radio station KEVA in Sweetwater.

Being well-known for his skills as a mechanic, Mr. West also possessed a vast knowledge of American automobiles. He was a great NASCAR fan and enjoyed all things relating to cars.

He was preceded in death by his parents Charley and Ina West; brothers Robert, Jack, "Whitey", Carl, and "Doc"; and sisters Mattie, Maxine, and Rae Jean.

Survivors include his beloved wife Dixie; daughter Debbie Miles and husband Ken of Albuquerque, New Mexico; two sons Kenneth West and wife Jacqueline, and Kevin West and wife Julie, all of Albuquerque, New Mexico; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; brothers Walt of Pampa, Billy of Flagstaff, Arizona, and sister Mary of Santa Paula, California.

Donations may be made to the First Pentecostal Holiness Church, PO Box 1451, Pampa, Texas  79066-1451.

Visitation will take place from 6:00-7:30 PM Thursday, March 1, 2018 at Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.
