Roy Caroll Word, 72, of Houston, formerly of Pampa, passed away on January 23, 2020 in Houston.
Services will be 2:00 PM Monday, January 27, 2020 at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel in Pampa with Brother Joel Shumate, of Temple, officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery under the directions of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.
Roy Caroll Word was born March 16, 1947 in Pampa, Texas, son of Jewell Dean Fullerton and T. J. Word. After graduation from Pampa High School, Roy attended North Texas State University in Denton, Texas and was a skilled carpenter, specializing in cabinet and wood finish work. Roy earned a private pilot license under the guidance of his stepfather, Wesley Lewis, and one of his proudest accomplishments was flying solo across the country, to the east coast of the United States.
Roy’s life was abruptly changed in 1983 when he was critically injured in a motorcycle – car accident in Galveston, Texas. After months of hospitalization, Roy was subsequently in skilled care nursing facilities until the time of his death at Focused Health Care of Beechnut – Houston, Texas. In spite of his medical challenges, Roy was a joyful and loving person who truly loved his family.
Survivors include his sister, Marjorie C. Easley and her husband Tom, of Houston; his niece, Mindy Karol Oates of Houston; his aunt, Dee Miller and husband Eska of McKinney; and a number of cousins. Roy was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Jewell Dean Lewis, in 2011 and stepfather, Wesley Lewis in 1965; an aunt, Dorothy Thornton; his father, T. J. Word; and his nephew, Mark Oates in 1984.
