Terry “Sweet Terry” Lee Hughes, 77, of Pampa, passed away on Monday, February 10, 2025 in Amarillo.
Memorial services will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at the Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Minister Jeffrey Dailey, executive pastor at St. John’s Baptist Church of Amarillo, officiating. Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.
Terry was born on February 21, 1947 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma to Champ Owner Hughes, Sr. and Rosa Lee Shacklefoot Hughes. He was raised in Pampa and graduated from Pampa High School in 1965. Terry started working at Highland General Hospital at 16 years old and later went to work for Coronado Hospital. After leaving the hospital, Terry started working for Pampa ISD as the maintenance supervisor. He was well known in the school district and was often referred to as “Sweet Terry”. Terry took great pride in his work and continued to serve the school until his retirement in 2022.
Terry was a gifted artist and enjoyed painting and drawing. He also enjoyed reading, watching wrestling, listening to Tupac, and learning new recipes from YouTube. Terry truly loved life and embraced it to the fullest.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Champ Hughes, Sr. and Rosa Lee Hughes; one brother, Champ Spain Hughes, Jr.; and one nephew, Keith Towles.
Terry is survived by his three siblings, Donald Gene Hughes and Linda Ford, both of Pampa, and Fannie Smith of Glen Allen, Virginia; special niece, Shannon Jackson of Amarillo; and several other nieces and nephews.
